CIVITAS Studio partnered with Perkins + Will winning an international competition for the master plan of this sustainable new community near the heart of Edmonton on a former airport site.
CIVITAS responsibilities focused on contributing to the overall master plan, providing land use distribution strategies, and concept design for the Town Centre/High Street precinct. The four big ideas behind the plan were:
- Connect to Nature - Preserving 1/3 of the land as public open space including the 50ha ‘Flyway Park’;
- Connect Communities - Extending streets and green links to surrounding neighbourhoods. Building along the planned LRT extension;
- Connect to Growth - Leverage existing catalysts and create new ones; integrate with North Alberta Institute of Technology, extend the regional retail energy of Kingsway Mall into a complimentary local High Street; and,
- Connect to History - Honour the history of the Blatchford airport as the “Gateway to the North” by embeding the runways into the master plan design and refit historic airport buildings.
