CIVITAS was engaged to prepare urban design options and develop a preferred plan for an important new mixed-use university gateway to the University of British Columbia. The gateway project is central to the University’s plan to develop a “University Town” that begins to integrate non-academic activities and uses into the campus in an effort to move towards a complete community. The design study investigated locating a transit centre underground with an at-grade plaza which would serve the heart of the university, as well as a retail shopping street with residential above. A key factor of the plan was accommodating phased implementation for the development, particularly with respect to the transit centre.
