Joseph C.V. Hruda, MAIBC

President + Founder

Joe Hruda is the founder and president of CIVITAS Urban Design and Planning Inc. and principal of CIVITAS Architecture Inc. He is a Harvard University Master of Architecture graduate and a Gold Medal recipient from the University of Manitoba. Joe has over 25 years of recognized design achievement in large-scale, urban, mixed-use projects. His recent achievements include a winning international competition entry as leading urban designer for the redevelopment of the Edmonton City Airport site in association with Perkins + Will Architects. In Vancouver, Joe was responsible for the planning and urban design of the Coal Harbour project on the downtown waterfront. Joe serves on the City of Vancouver Urban Design Panel, including a year as Chairman in 1999. In the USA, Joe was responsible for the urban design for a new community Master Plan at Galisteo River Basin in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which was exhibited at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. as an exemplary Green Community in 2008. Internationally, Joe was responsible for the urban design of the Rouse Hill Town Centre Master Plan, a major transit-oriented mixed-use town centre in Sydney, Australia, and the Liangzhu New Town, which includes a major cultural tourism precinct in Hangzhou, China. Joe was the lead urban designer for Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 and Plan Al Ain 2030 (which received a 2009 ISOCARP Award for Excellence); Plan Al Gharbia 2030, and the Abu Dhabi Capital City Master Plan and Federal Precinct (which received the Cityscape Award for the Best Master Plan Community).
